Abstract

The daily reading of the level of the water in rivers is primordial for the study of watershed. However, just one reading a day may not be enough to subsidize hydrological studies in small basins, due to the small time of concentration. Aiming to determining the interval of time for registration of rainfall and river flow that could allow the analysis of data to obtain peak flows and flow volumes compatible with the purposes of the several hydrological studies, studies were carried out in small sub-basins that form the Descoberto basin, in which level loggers were installed to record level reading at each 15min. Initially, preliminary works such as consistence analysis of the registered series, flowmeter calibration in laboratory and updating of stage-discharge curves were carried out. Errors in peak flow and total runoff volume using data registered at time intervals of 1, 2, 3 and 6 h, and the standard time intervals (7h00 and 17h00) were determined in relation to to the values obtained with data registered at each 15 min time interval. The pattern of these deviations was analyzed considering the physical characteristics of the basin. The variation of the concentration time with excess rainfall, runoff coefficient, rainfall intensity and peak flow was also analyzed and some correlation between concentration time, excess rainfall and peak flow was verified. The mean unit hydrograph of four basins with areas smaller than 25Km² were calculated for time intervals of 2, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 min. The information loss for peak discharge and total runoff volume was analyzed and it was verified that the best time intervals for the studied cases were smaller than those recommended by Sherman apud Pinto (1976) for small basins studies.
