Abstract

This work models in unsteady flow a potion of the Amazon River entirely located in Brazilian territory. The upstream limits are the gage stations of Manacapuru at the Solimões River, Moura at the Negro River and Vista Alegre at the Madeira River. The downstream limit is the gage station of Óbidos at the Amazon River. The modelisation was done by means of the employment of SIC (Simulation of Irrigation Canal) developed by CEMAGREF, institute of research of the Ministry of the Agriculture of France. The modelisation consisted in three steps: data acquisition, calibration of the steady flow and calibration of the unsteady flow. The data needed (discharge, stage and altimetry in the gage stations and bathymetry along the river) were obtained from the ANEEL (Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica) and HiBAM (Hidrologia e Geoquímica da Bacia Amazônica). The calibration of the roughness coefficient (Manning’s n) and the width of the medium riverbed were done at the steady flow step. The medium riverbed calibration was done to correct the n coefficient variation in respect to the surface water stage. With the medium riverbed concept introduced, each system reach has had one value for the roughness coefficient, leading to the elimination of the roughness variation related to the stage. At unsteady flow step the surface area for water storage during floods events was the unique parameter calibrated. During calibration, it was verified that head losses exists between storage area and main channel, which results in a hydraulic gradient (difference of stage between the two zones). The SIC version employed was unable to represent the hydraulic gradient. For this reason the unsteady flow calibration was not completely satisfactory. In spite that, the obtained results can be considered as an important step for the evolution of the hydrodynamic understanding of the Amazon basin. After the model calibration and verification, it was done simulations involving flood synchronisms among the Negro, Solimões and Madeira Rivers. Results show that this synchronism affects, sharply, the stage values at Manaus. Another application was the preliminary determination of the sediment transport capacity of the modeled system.
